VD10 Setup and Troubleshooting
The PORTTA VD10 is a video-to-digital recorder. It records video from an external playback device, but it does not play VHS tapes or camcorder tapes directly.
To digitize your media, you will need a separate device capable of playing it, such as:
- A VCR for VHS tapes
- A camcorder for Video8, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, or similar tapes
- Another compatible video playback source
Connect the output of the playback device to a supported input on the VD10.
Check the Signal Direction
The correct connection direction is:
Do not connect the VD10 to ports marked IN on the source device. The source device must send its video and audio signals out to the VD10.
Video and audio output ports on a VCR or combination unit may be labeled:
- AV OUT
- VIDEO OUT
- LINE OUT
- AUDIO OUT
- L/R AUDIO OUT
RCA connections on the front of many VCRs are inputs only and cannot send video or audio to the VD10.
On a DVD/VHS combination unit, use an output that supports VHS playback. Some outputs may work only for the DVD section or may require an output setting to be selected. Refer to the source device's user manual if the output behavior is unclear.
Back to contentsChoose the Correct Input Mode
The VD10 provides the following input modes:
- CVBS for Composite AV video
- S-Video for an S-Video connection
- AUX for audio-only recording
Use the Input Selection button next to the power button to select the mode that matches the connection being used.
If the screen shows audio level indicators but no video, the VD10 may be set to AUX. Select CVBS or S-Video according to the connection being used.
Connect a VCR with AV Cables
If your VCR has yellow, white, and red RCA output sockets, connect them to the matching inputs on the VD10.
- Connect the yellow RCA plug from VIDEO OUT on the VCR to the yellow video input on the VD10.
- Connect the white RCA plug from AUDIO OUT L to the left audio input on the VD10.
- Connect the red RCA plug from AUDIO OUT R to the right audio input on the VD10.
- Use the VD10 Input Selection button to select CVBS.
- Start playing the VHS tape before checking the VD10 screen.
RCA ports on the front of many VCRs are marked IN and are intended for connecting another device to the VCR. They cannot send the VHS signal to the VD10.
Connect a VCR with SCART
If your VCR outputs video through a SCART socket, use a SCART socket that supports signal output. Depending on the VCR, it may be labeled:
- TV
- AV1
- LINE 1
- EURO AV
- SCART OUT
The VD10 does not have a SCART input. You will need a separate SCART-to-AV adapter or cable.
Some SCART adapters are directional, while others include an IN/OUT switch. The adapter must send the signal out from the VCR, and any direction switch must be set to OUT.
After connecting the adapter, select CVBS on the VD10 and start playing the VHS tape.
If you are unsure whether a SCART socket provides output, refer to the VCR's user manual.
Back to contentsConnect a Camcorder
Use the original AV cable supplied with the camcorder whenever possible.
Although many camcorder AV cables use a similar 3.5 mm connector, their internal pin arrangements may differ between brands and models. A cable may physically fit the camcorder but still be electrically incompatible.
A standard audio cable does not carry the camcorder video signal required by the VD10. Use an AV cable designed for the specific camcorder model.
An incompatible AV cable may cause:
- Distorted or unstable video
- Audio only
- Video without audio
- No signal
Connect a Camcorder with Composite AV
- Connect the camcorder's video and audio outputs to the matching VD10 inputs.
- Select CVBS on the VD10.
- Start playing the tape on the camcorder.
Connect a Camcorder with S-Video
S-Video carries the video signal only. Audio must be connected separately using the red and white RCA audio cables.
- Connect the camcorder's S-Video output to the VD10 S-Video input.
- Connect the camcorder's left and right audio outputs to the VD10 audio inputs.
- Select S-Video on the VD10.
- Start playing the tape.
Some camcorders do not output a video signal while stopped, paused, or displaying only a menu screen.
Fix No Signal or No Video
If the VD10 displays No Signal or does not show video, first confirm that the source device is producing a usable video signal.
Connect the VCR or camcorder directly to a television using the same video output and cable, then start playing the tape.
- If the television displays the video correctly, the source device and cable are likely working. Recheck the VD10 connections and selected input mode.
- If the television also shows no video, check the source device output, cable, tape playback, and selected television input before troubleshooting the VD10 further.
Make sure the television input matches the connection being tested, such as AV, Composite Video, or S-Video.
Then complete all of the following checks:
- The source device is powered on.
- The tape is actively playing.
- The tape is not currently on a blank section.
- The cables are connected to output ports on the source device.
- The correct input mode is selected on the VD10.
- All cable connectors are fully inserted.
- If using SCART, the adapter supports output from the VCR and any IN/OUT switch is set to OUT.
- If using a camcorder, the AV cable has the correct pin arrangement for that camcorder model.
- If using S-Video, the source device is connected to the VD10 S-Video input and the VD10 is set to S-Video.
Why Does the VD10 Built-in Screen Turn Off
If the VD10 briefly displays the PORTTA logo during startup and then the built-in screen turns off, check whether an HDMI cable is connected.
The HDMI port on the VD10 is an output for displaying the VD10's video and audio on an external monitor or television. When HDMI is connected, the video is sent to the external display instead of the VD10 built-in screen.
When HDMI is connected:
- The VD10 built-in screen turns off after startup.
- The built-in speaker is muted.
- The AUX (Line) Out is muted.
Disconnect the HDMI cable from the VD10. The built-in screen, built-in speaker, and AUX (Line) Out should then become available again.
HDMI is an output only. It cannot be used to send video into the VD10 for recording.
If no HDMI cable is connected and the built-in screen still remains on the startup logo or does not display the normal interface, contact PORTTA Support for further assistance.
Back to contentsPrepare a USB Flash Drive
The VD10 records to a USB flash drive. It does not support external HDD or SSD storage.
Do not use a phone, USB card reader, USB hub, external HDD, or SSD as the recording storage device for the VD10.
For reliable recording, we recommend:
- A reliable USB 3.0 flash drive
- exFAT format
- A single partition
- At least 500 MB of available storage space
Formatting a USB flash drive erases all existing data on that drive.
If the VD10 does not detect the USB flash drive:
- Remove and reconnect the USB flash drive.
- Try a different USB flash drive.
- Confirm that the drive contains only one partition.
- Back up important files and reformat the drive using a supported file system.
Stop and Save a Recording Correctly
Do not remove the USB flash drive, turn off the VD10, or disconnect power while recording is still in progress or while the file is being saved.
To finish a recording safely:
- Press the REC/STOP button to end the recording.
- Wait until the Saving message completely disappears from the VD10 screen.
- If the USB flash drive has an activity light, wait until the light stops flashing.
- Only after the saving process has completed should you remove the USB flash drive or turn off the VD10.
Removing the USB flash drive or disconnecting power too early may prevent the video file from being finalized correctly. The recording may become incomplete, corrupted, or unplayable on the VD10, a computer, or another device.
If a recording cannot be played after transferring it to a computer, first confirm that the recording was stopped with the REC/STOP button and that the Saving message had completely disappeared before the USB flash drive was removed.
